After banging around in the panga for an hour, Bob pulled his camera out of the backpack to get ready for the whales when we found them. This is what he found:
His UV filter was shattered! Apparently during one of those bone-jarring crashes following an unusually large wave, the lens crashed into something else hard in the backpack. Even with the lens cap on, the UV filter was destroyed. The good news is this is actually the primary purpose for which this $40 item was purchased, to protect the main lens. So a $40 filter was ruined, but an $800 lens was saved.
So here is the question for day: Do you have a UV filter on your DSLR?

You bet! And for the same reason you have/had a UV filter on yours :-)
