Loreto

N 25*59.957 W 111*20.330 We made it to Loreto about 70 miles south of Bahia Concepcion before 2 PM and got settled into our campground, the Loreto Shores. It has about 25 spaces with full hook ups including laundry and wi-fi, and tonight it’s full! There’s a set of condos between us and the beach, about 100 yards from our space at the back of the lot, so it’s quite a change from where we’ve been for the last week. Our plan is to stay here two nights and then move on, maybe just down the beach, or maybe all the way to La Paz 225 miles away. Everybody else in the campground is part of a caravan, and they’re slated to move on in the morning, so after that we may have the place to ourselves. Today we caught up on email, did laundry and went to the supermercado (a large-ish grocery store), the first of those we have seen since we left Ensenada, and did a quick walking survey of the town. Loreto is an interesting mix. It’s the oldest Spanish settlement on Baja, but it’s been significantly redeveloped in the last couple of decades. It retains a strong sense of being Mexican, but also has a higher degree of order and tidiness than most of the Mexican towns we’ve seen in Baja, other than San Ignacio. I suspect the old-timers don’t much like what it has become, but to new-comers it seems quite nice. The picture is of the town’s 300-year-old church. Bob will try to get photos that capture the town better tomorrow.
