Since we left Olalla last Thursday, we’ve covered 2100 miles and four states. We blasted down the highway and arrived at our great friend Hobie’s casita at 6:00pm Saturday, and as soon as we got the 5th wheel parked in the driveway, Hobie handed Bob a glass of Johnny Walker Red and Cathryn a beer, and we took on the task of causing the sun to go down.
Over the next two days we explored Tucson, where the internationally famed DeGrazia Gallery was a highlight.
We also solved most of the world’s problems (and a few of our own) during our long evenings of endless conversation.
Today (Tuesday) we bid farewell to Hobie and drove to Potrero, California about 15 miles north of the Mexico border at Tecate. Here we met up with friends from previous trips to Baja, Doug and Jill from Penticton, B.C., Canada and friends of theirs Debbie and Greg, and are staging for our border crossing at Tecate in the morning.
We spent the evening by a campfire getting (re)acquainted and talking about our expectations for traveling together, at least while we’re in northern Baja. We’ve never traveled with a group before and were not sure what the expectations and plans would be, and whether it would be a good fit for us. But it sounds like we have similar thoughts (basically the plan is fluid, and we travel together for the first stretch, then play it by ear, but no one expects to be joined at the hip). Sounds like it will work well, and all four of the others strike us as mellow, easy-going folks.
We’re looking forward to being in Baja again, and hope to see 70 degrees within a day or two!
